It was in the 1950s, that Pan Am or American World Airways collaborated with the Rolex brand to manufacture a timepiece that could tell the time beyond one location. The result of this collaboration led to the launch of Rolex GMT-Master. The Rolex GMT-Master is one of the most demanding watches in the series. GMT-Master And How It Originated?
The Rolex GMT-Master reference 6542 is the first of every Rolex GMT-Master. Rolex decided to cater to the world’s largest airlines’ requirements through GMT-Master with two additional features over the standard Submariner model. The first watch was the bezel which has now changed into a two-tone bezel with a set of 24-hour increments followed by the fourth hand on the dial which ensured every rotation every 24 hours.
Since Rolex attached a Bakelite bezel on the GMT-Master for the first two years, the watch is considered both luxurious and rare.
Next Generation
The GMT-Master watches’ next generation was brought out by Rolex in 1959 and continued till 1980. The next generation GMT-Master timepiece with reference 1675 came boasted a new case diameter of 40mm and was available in a variety of metal combinations with customers’ choice of bracelet styles and bezel colours. Between 1959-1964, the watch used the calibre 1595 and this calibre was replaced in 1965 with calibre 1575. This was the last significant change the brand ever made.
The Rolex Gmt Master II
The iconic pilot’ watch new version was launched in 1982 with the name Rolex GMT-Master II reference 16760. The timepiece used 3075 calibres and featured the hacking seconds from the ancestor models but also added a quickset date. Also now the wearer of GMT-Master II can independently set the hour hand and this was a brilliant innovation of the watch.
